La producci\u00f3n de cemento, en particular, se asocia con una elevada huella de carbono debido tanto al consumo de energ\u00eda como a las reacciones qu\u00edmicas. Sin embargo, existe un aspecto menos conocido, pero relevante: a lo largo de su vida \u00fatil, el cemento es capaz de reabsorber parte del CO2 emitido mediante un proceso natural llamado recarbonataci\u00f3n del cemento.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hasta ahora, la contribuci\u00f3n de la carbonataci\u00f3n se consideraba marginal en los balances nacionales de emisiones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Sin embargo, un estudio reciente del MIT Concrete Sustainability Hub, publicado en la revista <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1073\/pnas.2515116122\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences<\/em><\/a> , ha cuestionado esta visi\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Utilizando un enfoque ascendente, investigadores han estimado por primera vez la cantidad de CO2 que absorbe anualmente el cemento en edificios e infraestructuras de Estados Unidos y M\u00e9xico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Los resultados muestran que, tan solo en 2024, el parque inmobiliario estadounidense absorbi\u00f3 m\u00e1s de 6.5 millones de toneladas de CO2, lo que equivale al 13% de las emisiones del proceso cementero del pa\u00eds. En M\u00e9xico, el fen\u00f3meno es a\u00fan m\u00e1s significativo: a pesar de utilizar la mitad de cemento que Estados Unidos, la absorci\u00f3n alcanza el 25% de las emisiones del sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La recarbonataci\u00f3n del cemento (tambi\u00e9n conocida como carbonataci\u00f3n) es un proceso qu\u00edmico conocido desde hace tiempo. El CO2 atmosf\u00e9rico penetra en los poros del hormig\u00f3n, reacciona con compuestos a base de calcio y forma carbonato de calcio estable. Sin embargo, la velocidad e intensidad de este proceso dependen de m\u00faltiples factores. El tipo de aglomerante (cemento Portland o mezclas alternativas), la porosidad del material (morteros versus hormigones compactos), la geometr\u00eda de los elementos (superficie expuesta al aire) y las condiciones ambientales (humedad, temperatura) desempe\u00f1an un papel crucial. Por ejemplo, una losa de hormig\u00f3n en Alaska absorbe CO2 mucho m\u00e1s lentamente que un muro de mortero en una ciudad mexicana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">La investigaci\u00f3n model\u00f3 cientos de <em>arquetipos<\/em> estructurales, simulando el comportamiento de diferentes elementos de construcci\u00f3n bajo diversas condiciones geogr\u00e1ficas y clim\u00e1ticas. Esto permiti\u00f3 una estimaci\u00f3n m\u00e1s realista del impacto del fen\u00f3meno a nivel nacional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Si bien no puede reemplazar estrategias m\u00e1s amplias de descarbonizaci\u00f3n, la recarbonizaci\u00f3n representa una oportunidad concreta para mejorar el balance de emisiones del sector de la construcci\u00f3n. Ciertas soluciones de dise\u00f1o, como el uso de mezclas menos densas, geometr\u00edas con superficies expuestas elevadas o la eliminaci\u00f3n de recubrimientos impermeables, pueden promover la absorci\u00f3n sin comprometer la durabilidad. Sin embargo, en presencia de refuerzos met\u00e1licos, el aumento de la humedad y el pH superficial pueden incrementar el riesgo de corrosi\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Por lo tanto, se requiere un equilibrio cuidadoso entre el dise\u00f1o estructural, la durabilidad y la sostenibilidad. Adem\u00e1s, la investigaci\u00f3n destaca c\u00f3mo los m\u00e9todos utilizados actualmente en los principales inventarios internacionales, incluidos los del IPCC, tienden a sobreestimar el papel de la carbonataci\u00f3n debido a la simplificaci\u00f3n de los modelos. Una revisi\u00f3n basada en datos emp\u00edricos podr\u00eda mejorar la precisi\u00f3n de los informes ambientales y destacar mejor la contribuci\u00f3n de los edificios existentes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El estudio proporciona la primera visi\u00f3n detallada del ciclo del carbono asociado al cemento en uso, llenando un vac\u00edo previamente ignorado en los modelos de emisiones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En el futuro, el m\u00e9todo podr\u00eda extenderse a otros pa\u00edses combinando las bases de datos del parque inmobiliario con los datos nacionales de producci\u00f3n de cemento.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Incluir correctamente la recarbonataci\u00f3n del cemento en las pol\u00edticas clim\u00e1ticas no significa minimizar las emisiones del sector, sino reconocer que los edificios existentes tambi\u00e9n pueden contribuir, a lo largo de su vida \u00fatil, a la reducci\u00f3n del CO2 atmosf\u00e9rico.
